GERMANY: Non-destructive test company Waygate Technologies has launched a fully automated ultrasonic wheelset testing system.
The Krautkrämer WheelStar RPS uses a robotic assembly to position the ultrasonic mechanics on wheelsets. In a fully automated process the wheel is then rotated by an underfloor unit while the inspection is facilitated using a phased array matrix probe with a compact design. The results are then compared with calibration data.
Once the first wheel has been inspected, WheelStar RPS moves on to the second wheel without any need for manual intervention, resulting in a cycle time of 6 min per wheelset.
Checks and re-checks are performed automatically, eliminating the need to manually handle reference wheelsets.
The system optimises defect detection across varying wheel geometries and wear conditions, ensuring precise inspections, minimises false indications and reducing avoidable costs.
The workflow is designed to be simple, helping to address the shortage of highly trained inspection personnel in the industry.
