VR has awarded Hitachi Rail STS a contract to supply onboard train control equipment for the 60 diesel-electric locomotives it has ordered from Stadler Valencia.

FINLAND: Stadler has awarded Hitachi Rail STS a contract to provide onboard train control equipment for the 60 diesel-electric locomotives it is to supply to national railway VR . This will be compatible with ETCS Baseline 3.6 as well as the JKV national train protection system.

The first five of the centre-cab shunting and short-haul locomotives ordered last year are expected to enter service in 2022, with the rest delivered by the end of 2025.

‘Over the last few years, we have experienced an unprecedented increase in the Nordic ERTMS onboard market, both for the upgrade of existing fleets and equipping brand new trains’, said Eric Morand, Hitachi Rail Vice-President for the Nordic Region, when the contract was announced on February 17.

He said the order ‘confirms Hitachi’s leading position in the ERTMS on-board Nordic market’ and ‘underlines our long-standing relationship with Stadler’ which includes providing ETCS for the ER1 double-deck Kiss EMUs supplied for Sweden’s Mälartåg services.
