Lusail LRT is planned as the transport backbone of the new city.

QATAR: Lusail Light Rail Transit project civil works contractor QDVC has awarded Thales a contract to supply and maintain the supervision, telecoms, security and automatic fare collection systems for the future 32 km network, including contactless ticketing.

The four-line tram network is being built under a contract which was formally signed on June 23 2014 by Qatar Rail and a consortium of railway systems partner Alstom and the QDVC joint venture of Qatari Diar and Vinci Construction Grands Projets.

Lusail LRT is scheduled to open in stages in 2018-20 as the transport backbone of the new city of 260 000 people which is being developed 23 km north of Doha.

It forms part of Qatar Rail’s national development programme, along with the Doha metro and the proposed long-distance passenger and freight network.
