SWEDEN: Stadler is to supply a fleet of customised Flirt electric multiple-units for the Arlanda Express service linking Stockholm Central station with the airport.
Operator A-Train has placed a SFr350m firm order for Stadler to deliver seven EMUs and provide 15 years of maintenance. The EMUs will be produced in Switzerland for entry into service from the end of 2029, when the current UK-built Alstom X3 units dating from 1999 will reach the end of their lives. There is an option for an eighth unit.

Airport shuttle concessionaire A-Train has secured loans of SKr5·6bn from nine banks to invest in fleet replacement and station improvements, including SKr728m for the trains which was agreed with IPEX Bank in April.

The 200 km/h EMUs will be customised to A-Train’s specific requirements, with a high level of comfort and interiors inspired by the modern, bright and open Nordic style of the A-Train Lounge at Stockholm C station.

The six-car units will be 164 m long, almost twice the length of the seven current four-cars units, and with 323 seats will increase seating capacity by over 50%.
‘We continue to deliver top-class customer service to our travellers, with modern, quiet and punctual trains’, said A-Train CEO Magnus Zetterberg when the order was announced on May 19. ‘We see a clear increase in leisure travellers choosing to travel with Arlanda express, and the increased capacity makes it possible to welcome even more.’
