NORWAY: The first of 55 Coradia Stream for the Nordics electric multiple-unts which state rolling stock company Norske Tog has ordered from Alstom has been delivered to Norway.

Entry into service of the Class 77 fleet is now planned from June 2026, following the completion of testing which will include running in mountainous areas during Norway’s harsh winter.

In December 2021 Norske Tog awarded Alstom a €1·8bn framework agreement to supply up to 200 Coradia Nordic EMUs, now branded as Coradia Stream for the Nordics. There was an initial firm order for 30, replacing 40-year old trains to provide greater comfort and capacity. A €230m firm order for a further 25 was announced in February 2023. The orders so far cover 36 trains for 160 km/h local services on routes L1 Spikkestad – Oslo – Lillestrøm and L2 Stabekk – Oslo –Ski, and 19 EMUs for 200 km/h for regional services in eastern Norway.

They have a design life of 40 years, with a modular approach allowing operators to customise the interiors and features according to their needs.

Accessibility features include low-floor entrances, wheelchair lifts, hearing loops and an accessible toilet.

‘Making the trains accessible for everyone has been a key focus’, said Norske Tog CEO Øystein Risan when the EMU was unveiled at infrastucture manager Bane Nor’s Grorud depot in Oslo, on June 10. ‘They will offer a much more user-friendly and accessible service – especially for wheelchair users, as well as those travelling with pushchairs or bicycles.’
