GERMANY: The Land of Bayern has awarded Siemens Mobility a contract to supply three Mireo Plus H hydrogen multiple-units to replace diesel trains on Südostbayernbahn services and thus reduce noise and exhaust emissions.
From late 2026 the hydrogen trains will serve eight stations on the 32·2 km non-electrified Mühldorf – Tüßling – Burghausen route. Deutsche Bahn will build an electrolysis plant in Mühldorf which will be 100% powered by green electricity. Siemens Mobility will service the hydrogen supply system.
The hydrogen variant of Siemens Mobility’s Mireo multiple-unit family has a roof-mounted fuel cell and underfloor lithium-ion batteries, with acceleration of 1·1 m/s², a maximum speed of 140 km/h and a range of up to 1 200 km. Refuelling takes approximately 15 min.
The two-car units for Bayern will feature low-floor access, nine spaces for bicycles, ETCS and high-frequency-permeable windows for improved mobile phone reception.
It is the second fleet order for Mireo Plus H units, with Niederbarnimer Eisenbahn having previously ordered units for Heidekrautbahn services.
‘We are proud to be delivering Mireo Plus H hydrogen trains to Deutsche Bahn and thus enabling emission-free mobility in our home region’, said Andre Rodenbeck, CEO Rolling Stock at Siemens Mobility, on April 28. ‘Our hydrogen trains feature mature technology, high energy efficiency, strong drive power, long operating range and low noise levels.’
Cornelia Würtz, Managing Director of DB RegioNetz Verkehrs, said ‘hydrogen trains are an important building block for DB on its path to achieving climate neutrality.’
