BULGARIA: Express Service has completed the refurbishment of two Class 77 diesel locomotives used by national operator BDZ on the 760 mm gauge Septemvri – Dobrinishte line.

The 4m leva contract was awarded in May 2020. The Maybach diesel engines have been replaced with Stage V compliant Caterpillar C32 engines, the cabs rebuilt, compressors replaced and electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems completely refurbished.

Romanian manufacturer 23 August supplied 10 Class 77 locos to BDZ in 1988. Five were sold to Argentina in 1996, but two are still used on BDZ’s last surviving narrow gauge line, along with five Class 75 locos supplied by Henschel in 1965.
