INDONESIA: The first of 54 Class CC205 diesel locomotives being supplied by Progress Rail under a contract placed in February 2024 entered service with national railway PT KAI on August 20.
The manufacturer said the US-built EMD GT38AC locomotives feature modern air-conditioned cabs with CCTV and a driver fatigue and distraction monitoring system, infrastructure monitoring equipment and ‘Tier 3-capable’ emissions performance.
The 1 067 mm gauge locos will be used to haul 61-wagon trains carrying 3 050 tonnes of coal in south Sumatra.
The operator said a train can replace hundreds of container lorries, reducing traffic congestion and lowering air pollution, with the new locos reducing CO₂ emissions by up to 84% compared to road haulage options.
