Transitio has signed a firm order for eight Stadler double-deck EMUs for use on Upptåget services.

SWEDEN: Local authority owned rolling stock procurement body AB Transitio has signed a firm order for eight Stadler double-deck electric multiple-units for use on Upptåget services from the end of 2019. The firm order announced by Stadler on February 14 has been placed as an option on a 2016 contract which covered an initial 33 EMUs worth SKr3·5bn for Mälardalen regional services with options for up to 110 more.

The aluminium bodied EMUs from Stadler’s Kiss family of double-deck EMUs will exploit the larger loading gauge available in Sweden. They will also have dry transformers that do not require oil coolant.

Other localised features will include ‘excellent’ resistance to severe winter weather, based on Stadler’s experience supplying rolling stock to Norway, Finland, Estonia, Russia and Belarus. This will include enclosed equipment rooms, double-wall inter-car gangways, snow scrapers between the bogies and bodies, a heat recovery system, floor heating and high-quality insulation.

Swedish suppliers involved in the project include Icomera, Kockum Sonics, ÅF-Infrastructure and Hök Instrument.
