SWEDEN: Local authority owned rolling stock leasing company AB Transitio has awarded Stadler a firm order to supply a further 13 double-deck electric multiple-units.

They are to be delivered from March 2028 for use by transport authority Mälardalstrafik on Mälartåg services in the Stockholm-Mälaren region.

The order has been placed as an option on a 2016 framework contract which has so far seen 53 Stadler trainsets delivered.

Mälardalstrafik increased services between Stockholm and Uppsala at the end of 2024, which has put pressure on the existing fleet.

‘With these additional 13 units we will strengthen the robustness of the Mälardalstrafik fleet and further increase synergies and standardisation in Transitio’s rolling stock fleet’, said Transitio CEO Magnus von Bahr on August 4.

Chairman of the Mälardalstrafik board Anton Fendert said ‘Mälartåg connects the Stockholm-Mälaren region and increases the opportunity to work and live where you want. In order to continue to offer stable and reliable traffic, the regions behind Mälardalstrafik are now investing in new trains. They are needed for reliable traffic for today’s travellers, but also provide room for continued development with increased traffic. This means that even more people will be able to travel sustainably and collectively in the future.’

The 200 km/h four-car 15 kV 16·7 Hz EMUs are designed to take advantage of Sweden’s large loading gauge, being 2 920 mm wide and 4 700 mm high, 120 mm wider and 100 mm higher than previous Stadler Kiss double-deck sets.

They are winterised for operation in temperatures down to -40°C and able to cope with 800 mm of snow on the track, with enclosed equipment rooms, twin-bellow gangway connections, snow-clearing equipment and underfloor heating. They have 357 seats, with individual reading lights, power sockets, tables, wi-fi and mobile phone boosters.

‘The Kiss double-deck train combines Nordic robustness with state-of-the-art comfort’, said Ansgar Brockmeyer, Head of Marketing & Sales & Deputy Group CEO of Stadler. ‘This is ideal for reliable, efficient and comfortable regional transport in the Stockholm-Mälaren region. We have a proven track record of effective collaboration with AB Transitio, and I am delighted that we can continue this partnership.’
