ITALY: FS Group’s freight operator Mercitalia Rail has begun taking delivery of 70 Traxx Universal electric locomotives which are to be supplied from Alstom’s Vado Ligure factory by 2027.

The €323m contract awarded in June 2024 includes 12 years of maintenance. There is an option for a further 30 locomotives and to extend the maintenance period.

Some of the locos will have a last mile capability for use in non-electrified ports, terminals and industrial areas.

Mercitalia Rail already has 60 Traxx Universal locos in service, and said the latest version would require less maintenance and at longer intervals.

Announcing the arrival of the first two locos, on April 30, CEO Sabrina De Filippis said Mercitalia Logistics is modernising its fleet and terminals and investing in digitalisation to consolidate its place in the European industrial system.
