POLAND: PKP Intercity has received two bids for a contract to supply 200 km/h double-deck electric multiple-units.
The passenger operator’s COO Adam Wawrzyniak said the proposals from Alstom and Stadler were both within the budget, and the tender committee is now working on a detailed assessment. ‘The revolution on Polish tracks is getting closer’, he said.
A firm order for 42 trainsets is planned, with an option for a further 30. The contract would include 30 years of full maintenance.
The double-deck trains would be used on services linking Warszawa with Gdańsk, Łódź, Olsztyn, Wrocław, Kraków, Białystok and Terespol.

The specification includes a capacity of around 500 passengers, quiet zones, play areas for children, vending machines, and spaces for bicycles and luggage. Technical requirements include 25 kV 50 Hz and 3 kV DC operation, ETCS and a diagnostics system.
PKP Intercity initially began procurement in 2021, but the first two calls for tenders were unsuccessful with the bids exceeding the budget by 45% in the first tender and 28% in the second. The current tendering process was launched in 2024.
