SWEDEN: Västra Götaland transport authority Västtrafik has selected Bombardier Transportation as the winner of a SKr3·8bn contract to supply 40 three-car electric multiple-units for regional passenger services.

The order is intended to support an increase in ridership to 130 000 passengers/day by 2035, triple the number carried in 2006. The vehicles are to be produced in Germany, with the first scheduled to be delivered at the end of 2021. There is an option for up to 60 more units.

Announcing the selection of Bombardier on March 23, the authority said it had sought a ‘comfortable and reliable’ EMU, offering a high capacity and able to operate at up to 200 km/h in the harsh local climate. The EMUs will be around 80 m long, with about 270 seats, wi-fi, a low-floor area and multi-purpose areas for wheelchairs, pushchairs and bicycles.
