Book reviews

by Colin Taylor

The opening of the Alice Springs to Darwin railway has brought an update to this established guide.

The fifth edition runs to 304 pages, covering main routes, branch lines and preserved operations. There are suggested itineraries and details of the lines, with city guides to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Canberra and Darwin.

The pocket-sized book contains 70 route maps and city plans, along with details of the history of the railways and the country. The full spectrum of budgets is catered for, ranging from the hire of private carriages to rail passes and reclining seats for more budget-conscious travellers.
