UK: Colas Rail has expanded its on-track plant fleet which it says was already 'the largest and most advanced' in the UK, with the acquisition of Amey's on-track tamping machines business for £5m.

The sale announced on November 29 'provides significant synergies with our existing extensive on-track plant business allowing us to provide an enhanced service to Network Rail whilst providing enhanced support and focus to the staff and tampers that have transferred', said Stephen Haynes, Managing Director of Colas Rail Services.

Amey has provided tamping services since the 1990s. 'As one of Network Rail's largest providers we remain absolutely committed to the rail market', said Lee Jones, Amey's Director of Operations for Rail & Metro. 'Our future strategy in rail focuses us on our core offerings of asset management, rail projects, metro services, track renewals, signalling and electrification. The tamper machines are a very small part of our business and the sale of these machines to Colas Rail is the right fit at the right time for both our businesses' forward plans.'
