SPAIN: Infrastructure authority ADIF has begun functional trials of ETCS Level 2 signalling on the Madrid - Lleida section of the high speed line to Barcelona. The trials involve the use of a Talgo BT test train to verify the correct functioning of lineside equipment, as well as RENFE Class 103 trainsets.

Stepping up to Level 2 with the transmission of movement authority via GSM-R and Radio Block Centres should enable maximum speed in commercial service to be raised from 300 to 350 km/h. Capacity would also be increased.
