CZECH REPUBLIC: Škoda Group has entered a strategic partnership with US electric vehicle battery technology company Microvast to develop and manufacture battery systems for public transport applications, primarily battery-electric multiple-units.
The partnership aims to combine Microvast’s expertise in the design and manufacture of lithium-ion battery packs with Škoda Group’s experience in the design and certification of rail vehicles and trolleybuses.
The initial phase of the collaboration will focus on developing batteries for rail applications, with the first vehicle with the new battery system to be completed by the end of 2026. The technology could then be used in other types of vehicle, such as electric buses.
‘We are committed to developing our own battery technology as the cornerstone of our future solutions for zero-emission mobility’, said Jaromír Šilhánek, President of Business Units at Škoda Group, on November 5. ‘The partnership with Microvast combines our in-depth knowledge of transport systems with their cutting-edge battery innovations. This will enable us to manufacture highly competitive products made in Europe. This collaboration not only strengthens our own vehicle portfolio, but also paves the way for offering advanced battery systems to other manufacturers in the industry.’
