USA: The City of Charlotte has selected Balfour Beatty Infrastructure to undertake track and systems work for the Charlotte Area Transit System LYNX Blue Line extension and the Blue Line Capacity Expansion Project.

The $131m contract covers construction of ballasted track, overhead catenary and 11 traction substations, as well as installation of communications and train control. The 15 km extension will link Center City with the University of North Carolina campus via North Davidson, adding 11 stops and almost doubling the length of the Blue Line when it opens in 2017. Balfour Beatty will also lengthen station platforms and add power supply stations on the first phase of the line as part of the capacity expansion project.

The work will be executed together with the team undertaking civil works on Segment A of the Blue Line, for which Balfour Beatty was awarded a $105·7m contract earlier in the year.
