AZERBAIJAN: National railway ADY has expanded and modernised its fleet with the purchase of 100 platform and 200 open wagons to support faster and more efficient operations on domestic routes as well as north-south and east-west international corridors.
The platform wagons with a load capacity of 72 tonnes and a design life of 32 years will enable the more cost-effective transport of 20 ft and 40 ft containers to help meet growing demand on the Middle Corridor route from China.
Between January and July 2025, ADY received 225 block trains from China, almost double the figure during the same period last year, and more than 400 in total are expected this year.
The platform wagons are also suitable for transporting timber, pipes, rails, heavy equipment and oversized loads, with a simplified design offering reduced handling times.
The open wagons have a capacity of 70 tonnes and 85 m3 for the transport of bulk and special cargo, including timber, crushed stone and construction materials. They are designed for a service life of 22 years, with the lack of complex mechanisms making maintenance, unloading and repair straightforward.
