AUSTRALIA: Transport for New South Wales and Sydney Trains have awarded Alstom two contracts to design, supply and support ETCS Level 2 trackside equipment.

This forms part of the Digital Systems element of the state’s More Trains, More Services programme, which aims to modernise Sydney’s rail network to provide high capacity turn-up-and-go services.

Alstom is to install its Atlas and Smartlock trackside equipment between Bondi Junction and Erskineville for full operation in 2024, while a 20-year framework agreement is designed to enable ‘seamless’ future implementation across the network.

‘The Digital Systems programme will provide a step-change in operations for Sydney Trains and NSW Trains’, said Mark Coxon, Managing Director for Alstom in Australia & New Zealand, on August 15. ‘Alstom is committed to partnering with TfNSW to deliver a sustainable, innovative and value for money solution.’

Alstom has previously supplied CBTC for the Sydney metro and suburban services in Melbourne. Its ETCS Level 1 equipment is in use on the NSW and Queensland suburban networks. It has also supplied signalling systems for freight and mining lines operated by Fortescue Metals Group and BHP in Western Australia.
