SPAIN: The Ministry of Transport & Sustainable Mobility has awarded a joint venture of WSP Spain and Mcrit a €1m contract to study the viability of building a long-proposed a railway linking Málaga with the airport, the Costa del Sol resorts and Algeciras.
Lines would run from Málaga east to Nerja and west to Fuengirola, Marbella, Estepona and Algeciras.
The study will look at whether it would be possible to incorporate the route of the existing Cercanías Line C1 between Málaga, the airport and Fuengirola, which is electrified at 3 kV DC but is partly single-track, which restricts capacity. At present, this line does not serve densely populated municipalities to the west of Fuengirola such as Estepona or Marbella, and does not reach the eastern Costa del Sol.
