NEW ZEALAND: An Alstom Iconis Traffic Management System went live on the Wairarapa Line from Wellington on May 3, as the first step in a major digitalisation programme which will eventually see KiwiRail manage its entire network from two control centres in Wellington and Auckland.

The TMS will enable KiwiRail to access real-time data on operations, facilitating an increase in network capacity and resilience, and enabling more reliable and earlier passenger communications.

KiwiRail awarded Alstom the ‘once-in-a-generation’ contract to deploy an integrated traffic management system for the national network in 2022. Alstom will also provide long term support, training and maintenance for each phase of the deployment.

‘Alstom’s technology delivers future-proofing of the New Zealand railway network to allow us to support network growth and increased passenger numbers while also delivering a transformation experience for our staff that operate the network and, ultimately, a better passenger and freight service experience’, said KiwiRail Project Director Carl Mills when the first section went live.
