URUGUAY: Nascent rail freight operator Portren has begun construction of a US$25m workshop and operations centre near Juanicó where it will maintain its growing rolling stock fleet

Portren is a three-way joint venture formed by Deutsche Bahn International Operations, Christophersen of Uruguay and the Spanish company Cointer. It has been selected to transport 2·3 million tonnes/year of pulp and chemicals for the UPM cellulose plant, which is being built on the south side of the Rio Negro near Paso de los Toros, 270 km north of Montevideo.

The operator is procuring a fleet of of seven Stadler Euro4001 diesel locomotives, 120 wagons for pulp wood traffic and 20 fuel oil and chemical tank wagons, at a total cost of US$95m.
