THAILAND: Mass Rapid Transit Authority has held public consultations to seek feedback on the project design for the planned light rail Red Line light rail in Chiang Mai.

Running from west to east, the 5 km V-shaped Red Line with six stops would link Luang Ratchapruk park to the Mae Hia Saman Samakkee Intersection in the south of the city.

Feasibility studies for the project have been under way since October 2025, and final approval is expected by April 2027. A consultation meeting on March 24 was told that construction work could start in October 2028 for a planned opening in December 2032.

MRTA intends to develop and operate the tramway under a public-private partnership, and the authority is aiming to invite tenders from potential private investors in 2027.
