First Valley Line West LRT light rail vehicle arriving in Edmonton

Hyundai Rotem is also supplying low-floor LRVs for the Valley Line West project.

CANADA: The city of Edmonton has selected Hyundai Rotem as preferred bidder for a contract to supply 40 high-floor light rail vehicles for the Capital and Metro lines.

The municipality said two of the three bidders which were shortlisted had submitted proposals, and Hyundai Rotem received the highest combined technical and financial score.

The LRVs will replace 37 Siemens U2 vehicles which are near the end of their service life. Additional vehicles are also being procured to accommodate service growth for the Capital Line South Extension and Metro Line Northwest Extension.

The contract is expected to be finalised in early 2026, enabling design and manufacturing to begin for deliveries in 2029-30.

‘We’re pleased to be moving to the next step in the procurement process for the light rail vehicles the city needs to maintain and expand its transit service’, said Bruce Ferguson, Branch Manager, LRT Expansion & Renewal, on December 19. ‘We look forward to working with Hyundai Rotem Company to deliver this crucial infrastructure to support Edmonton’s growth to a city of 2 million people.’

Hyundai Rotem is supplying 46 low-floor LRVs for the Valley Line West project under a separate contract awarded in 2021.
