POLAND: Operator MPK Kraków has signed a 461·1m złoty contract with Pesa Bydgoszcz for the supply of 20 trams that will be more than 43 m long.
This is the second option called from the 1·8bn złoty framework contract that Kraków city council signed with Pesa in April 2025 for the supply of 90 Twist 3.0 light rail vehicles. The first firm contract for the supply of 30 trams 32 m to 34 m in length was confirmed in August.
Each of the low-floor trams are to have air-conditioning, CCTV, a passenger information system adapted to the needs of blind and visually impaired passengers, and dedicated wheelchair spaces. One of the trams is to be equipped with batteries, enabling it to run for 3 km without using the overhead wires.
Delivery of the first long tram is due for the third quarter of 2028, and the last in mid-2029.
The long trams are to be used on Kraków’s busiest lines, including Route 52, where they are to replace the operator’s remaining Konstal 105Na high-floor trams. These currently run in high-capacity formations comprising three cars coupled together.
‘The agreement we signed with Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego is a loan on very favourable terms, with a fixed interest rate of just 1%. The loan repayment period is spread over 20 years. Such attractive financial terms mean that this purchase will not result in an increase in transport fares for the city, and in the case of the [MPK Kraków] company, it will reduce loan costs. Equally important is that the purchase of these trams will improve the comfort of work for our tram drivers’, said Rafał Świerczyński, CEO of MPK in Kraków.
