RUSSIA: The second Moskva tramway ‘Diameter’ line T2 has opened, forming a 33 km route which operator Moskva Metro claims is the longest urban tram route in the world.
T2 connects Chertanovskaya metro station in the south of the capital with the MCD-4 Novogireevo station in the east,. The line has 79 stops and an end-to-end journey time of more than 2 h.

Route T2 was opened on April 9 by Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, who said the number of passengers on the capital’s tram routes has grown significantly in recent years.
Diameter line T1 opened in 2025 as part of a plan to create a ‘ground-level metro’ providing new routes across the city, reduced travel times and convenient transfers to the metro and suburban rail lines.
Moskva Metro said development of the tram network remains one of the priorities of the city’s transport strategy, and infrastructure modernisation and rolling stock renewals are planned for the coming years to improve the speed, reliability and environmental friendliness of the surface transport system.
