UK: Transport for Greater Manchester has begun the procurement process for a multi-year light rail asset renewals contract worth up to £1·6bn.
Running for 12 years from 2027, the contract would cover the replacement of Metrolink’s light rail network infrastructure such as track, overhead electrification and power distribution systems.
It could also include a range of additional works including tram stop improvements, new stops, line extensions and main line railway accessibility schemes.
An initial market engagement phase will allow potential suppliers to provide feedback on the proposed approach, taking into account the potential scale, variety and complexity of the work.
TfGM is particularly keen to understand suppliers’ views on different delivery models, including partnering arrangements and the feasibility of bundling multiple workstreams under a single contract to drive efficiency and reduce disruption. It would also like to hear their thoughts on how best to tackle what is likely to be a large amount of activity for Metrolink and potentially other programmes.
‘This is a significant opportunity for suppliers to help shape how we deliver the next generation of Metrolink and rail accessibility infrastructure across Greater Manchester’, said TfGM Chief Network Officer Danny Vaughan on August 5. ‘We are looking for innovative, efficient and collaborative approaches’, and ‘we encourage all interested parties to engage with us’.
