DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: President Danilo Medina inaugurated the second line of the Santo Domingo metro on April 1. Line 2 runs on an east-west alignment from María Montez to Eduardo Brito. The 12·8 km line has 14 stations, including an interchange with the north-south Line 1 at Juan Pablo Duarte.

The end-to-end journey time is 25 min and services are provided by 15 three-car Alstom Metropolis trainsets. Operator Opret expects 120 000 passengers per day within a year of opening.

Construction of Line 2 started in 2010 and cost US$830m. There are plans to extend the line by 8 km and six stations, but Medina hinted that work would only start once the economic situation improves.
