INDONESIA: MRT Jakarta has awarded Sumitomo Corp and Nippon Sharyo a ¥17bn contract to supply eight six-car metro trainsets for Phase 2A of the Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit North-South Line project.

The 5·8 km Phase 2A underground extension of the North-South Line will run from Bundaran HI in central Jakarta to Kota district in the north.

The rolling stock contract CP206 signed on October 21 is being financed with an official development assistance loan from the Japan International Co-operation Agency under the Special Terms for Economic Partnership scheme.

The Japanese companies said the contract had been awarded on the basis of the success of the 96 cars they supplied for Phase 1 which opened in 2019. The latest trainsets to the same design are to be delivered within 56 months.

The suppliers said they would continue to explore potential opportunities to support the development of Indonesia’s rail network.
