ITALY: The city of Napoli has awarded Hitachi Rail a €630m contract for the construction of the light metro Line 6 depot at Via Campegna and a station at Campegna.

The 110 000 m² depot to be built near the existing Campi Flegrei railway station is needed to maintain 22 trainsets which were ordered in 2024 and are currently being manufactured at Hitachi Rail’s plants for delivery from 2026. These will enable Line 6 services to be increased to run every 4½ min.

Campegna station forms part of plans to build two diverging extensions of Line 6 to serve the densely populated Bagnoli and Posillipo areas of western Napoli. Construction of the depot and station is expected to take just over seven years.

Phase one is immediately implementable with existing funding of around €325m from the Ministry of Infrastructure & Transportation and EU sources. Phase two would require further government financing which the city has requested.

‘Signing this contract marks a decisive step toward completing Line 6, a strategic infrastructure that will transform mobility in our city’, said Mayor Gaetano Manfredi on December 2. ‘It is a major investment, the result of a virtuous collaboration between the city of Naploi and Hitachi Rail, confirming our commitment to making Napoli increasingly modern, connected and environmentally conscious.’
