INDIA: Rolling stock manufacturer Titagarh Rail Systems has awarded ABB a contract to supply propulsion systems and Train Control & Management System software for metro trainsets ordered by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority.
‘This order marks ABB’s entry into the 25 kV AC metro segment in India, a significant milestone that expands our technology presence in the metro rail sector’, said Roger Buchmann, Global Business Line Head for Rail Systems at ABB, on January 27. ‘By combining optimised power usage with localised manufacturing, we are supporting sustainable mobility, reduced lifecycle energy consumption, and a lower environmental footprint for India’s growing metro networks.’
The contract covers traction converters, auxiliary converters, traction motors and TCMS software for 18 six-car trainsets for the 15·6 km elevated Line 6 (Pink) which is under construction from Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli EEH, and 22 six-car sets for the 24·9 km elevated Line 5 (Orange) which is being developed in two phases to run from Kapurbawdi to Kasheli, Dhamankar Naka, Bhiwandi and Kalyan APMC.
ABB will produce the components across its Indian sites, with the converters to be manufactured in Bengaluru and motors in Vadodara, supported by local engineering, testing and service teams.
ABB and Titagarh have been collaborating on Indian metro projects since 2023, and the latest order envisages the gradual co-production of traction motors, traction converters and auxiliary converters at Titagarh’s plant in Uttarpara, West Bengal.
Titagarh said ’this is another step towards achieving national self-reliance by strengthening indigenous advanced manufacturing and Titagarh’s strategy towards backward integration across the value chain, while aligning private sector execution with the government’s strategic push for globally competitive, future-ready rail infrastructure.’
