EGYPT: The 56·5 km East Nile monorail with 22 stations was opened on March 20 with a ceremony attended by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.

It links Cairo Stadium station on metro Line 3 in Nasr City with Station 22 in the New Administrative Capital. Test running has been underway since November 2023.

Interchange is provided at Arts and Culture City station to the Capital Train suburban rail line, while interchanges are to be provided to future metro lines 4 and 6. Stations are equipped with LED information screens and platform screen doors.

The East Nile line was built by the consortium of Alstom, Orascom Construction and Arab Contractors. The scope covers design, construction as well as 30 years of operation and maintenance.

Alstom supplied 70 four-car, fully automated Innovia 300 monorail trainsets, manufactured at its Derby Litchurch Lane Works in the UK. Trains operate at every 1 min 30 sec, and an end-to-end journey time is 1 h.

Alstom also supplied its Cityflo 650 CBTC signalling system, providing a design capacity of up to 600 000 passengers per day.

Being delivered by the same contractors, the 42 km long West Nile monorail is under construction between October 6 City and Wadi El Nile station on metro Line 3 in Giza, west of Cairo.
