USA: Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority has awarded Alstom Transport two rolling stock modernisation contracts with a total value of €170m. The work is to be undertaken at Alstom's plant in Hornell, New York, with at least 80% US content.

The first of the contracts announced on November 1 covers the modernisation of 86 light rail vehicles used on Boston's Green Line. They will get new interior surfaces, traction equipment and climate control, with the first scheduled to return to service in late 2013.

The second contract is to refurbish 74 double-deck commuter coaches. Work will include overhauling the braking systems, and the installation of new operator control screens, passenger information displays, seating and update door controls. The first are to be completed by late 2013, with the rest following at a rate of four per month.
