GERMANY: DB is trialling a Touch & Travel ticketing application for use with Apple's iPhone smart phone. The application can use three forms of ticket validation and fare collection: automatic position determination, 2D bar codes or the input of touch point numbers.

On long-distance ICE/IC and EC trains ticket purchasing is undertaken by automatic position determination; on commuter trains and the urban rail networks in Berlin and Potsdam all three options are available.

The ticket price is automatically calculated and the customer is billed at the end of each month. The pilot will last until June 30, and 10 000 users are expected to test the application.
