FINLAND: Helsinki regional transport authority HSL has awarded Conduent Transportation a contract to supply fare collection equipment for buses, trams, trains, metros and ferries.

There were 238 million passenger boardings on these services in 2021.

The first phase of the project is scheduled to begin in late 2022 and will see Conduent supply 4 500 validators enabling passengers to pay with contactless credit and debit cards, NFC-enabled devices, smart cards or via QR codes. The second phase would roll-out account-based ticketing.

‘HSL wants to modernise the system as it will enhance the riders’ experience and make access quick and easy’, said programme manager Sami Kaipiainen. ‘Conduent’s advanced technology and expertise in smart mobility made them the right partner for this major project.’

Conduent fare collection systems are in use on more than 400 public transport networks worldwide, and it has worked with Finnish national railway VR Group to upgrade its ticketing infrastructure.
