USA: Connecticut Department of Transportation has unveiled a mock-up of coaches to be supplied by Alstom for CTrail commuter rail services.

In August 2023 CTDOT awarded Alstom a $315m contract to supply 60 coaches to expand the state’s fleet and replace older vehicles. They will primarily operate on the Hartford Line between New Haven and Springfield, Massachusetts. There are options for 313 more vehicles.

Part of Alstom’s Adessia family, the 26 m long single-deck stainless steel loco-hauled coaches are designed for operation at up to 177 km/h. They will feature 2+2 seating, laptop tables, extra-wide windows, power outlets, USB charging ports, overhead luggage racks and areas for wheelchairs, pushchairs and bicycles.

The wooden full-size mock-up unveiled at New Haven’s Union Station on November 24 represents the interior of half of a coach, with seats, finishes and a wheelchair-accessible toilet. Visitors can tour it on Tuesdays until January 6.

‘We are thrilled to give Connecticut riders a hands-on preview of our future rail cars’, said CTDOT Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto. ‘This prototype makes clear our commitment to rail travel that’s modern and accessible, designed around today’s riders and their need for comfort, Americans with Disabilities Act access and thoughtful amenities.’

The first of the coaches are expected to be delivered in late 2026.

Scott Sherin, Chief US Commercial Officer for Alstom, said ‘these new passenger coaches will provide many years of fast and reliable service, reduce traffic congestion along highways and help the state achieve its 2030 emissions targets’.
