DENMARK: National passenger operator DSB is to place a firm order for a further 50 Alstom Coradia Stream IC5 electric multiple-units.
The order announced on June 26 is being placed under a June 2021 framework agreement which included a €1·4bn firm order for an initial 100 five-car EMUs for 200 km/h inter-city and regional services. Production is underway at Alstom’s Salzgitter plant in Germany, and the first IC5 is expected to arrive in Denmark later this year. Following testing and staff training, the IC5 units are now expected to enter passenger service from 2027. Alstom will maintain the fleet at depots being built in Aarhus and København.
The EMUs will replace aging diesel trains which are to be phased out as part of a 25 kV 50 Hz electrification programme which aims to give DSB a 100% electric fleet in 2030. As well as environmental benefits, this will to provide a more uniform fleet.
With the decision to order more IC5 sets ‘we confirm our ambition to build a reliable, future-proof electric fleet for Denmark’, said Jürgen Müller, DSB’s Director of Strategy & Rolling Stock. ‘We remain confident that Alstom and the IC5 trains will deliver the quality, consistency and comfort that our passengers expect.’
