CHILE: State railway EFE has ordered a further 12 X’Trapolis Modular EMUs from Alstom, exercising an option within a €54m contract for 12 units announced in October 2012.

Each capable of accommodating 376 passengers, the new two-car EMUs are due to enter service during the first half of 2014 on the Santiago – Rancagua route. With a maximum speed of 120 km/h, they are expected to cut the fastest journey time over the 82 km from 1 h 20 min to 50 min.

Infrastructure upgrades to support these accelerated services include the replacement of all level crossings between Santiago and Rancagua with bridges, and improved fencing for the railway.
