POLAND: Pesa Bydgoszcz has received 36m złoty in co-financing from the EU Recovery & Resilience Fund to support its 108m złoty project to develop a tri-mode multiple-unit.
The project is being supported via Poland’s National Fund for Environmental Protection & Water Management, which signed an agreement on February 13 with the manufacturer confirming the allocation of the grant funding.
NFOŚiGW claims that this will be the first tri-mode train in Poland capable of running under overhead wires, or being powered via hydrogen fuel cell or battery traction.
Pesa is to develop a prototype vehicle equipped with a control system able to select the most efficient traction mode. Approximately 40% of Polish railway lines are unelectrified, which the manufacturer says offers significant potential demand for such vehicles.
Under a September 2025 agreement, NFOŚiGW has already disbursed 53m złoty of EU co-financing for a wider programme worth 163m złoty which includes the construction of production infrastructure at Pesa’s Bydgoszcz plant. This will support the car builder’s ability to develop hydrogen-powered rail vehicles through creation of a dedicated 15 000 m² production facility.
