RENFE train and passengers at Valencia station

SPAIN: National train operator RENFE has called tenders for the supply of 30 high speed trainsets, with options for 10 more.

The base order has an estimated value of €1·37bn, with the option potentially taking it to €1·78bn.

The call for tenders on March 25 restarts a procurement process which had been paused in the aftermath of the fatal derailment and collision at Adamuz on January 18.

Requirements

RENFE’s requirements for the 1 435 mm standard gauge trainsets include a maximum service speed of 350 km/h, ETCS and the ASFA Digital safety system.

They should have a minimum of 450 seats in two classes, with a buffet and spaces for wheelchair users and bicycles.

Bids evaluation will take into account technical, commercial and maintenance factors, including delivery timescales and reliability. The first five trainsets are required to be in service within 30 months of contract signing, while the remainder must be operative within 78 months.

The trains are required to replace RENFE’s oldest high speed trainsets, in particular the 24 Class 100s which will be life expired in 2032. They will also be needed to increase capacity on Avant middle-distance high speed services and to expand services on other existing and new routes as the high speed network expands to destinations including Bilbao, Vitoria-Gasteiz, San Sebastián, Pamplona and Almería, and one day to Lisboa.
