ITALY: Alstom and Trenitalia have unveiled a variant of the Coradia Stream regional electric multiple-unit family with a higher maximum speed of 200 km/h to enable operation on the Firenze – Roma Direttissima high speed line.
So far 12 eight-car 200 km/h EMUs have been ordered within a 2021 framework agreement covering up to 150 Coradia Stream trainsets, known as Pop under the national operator’s music-themed branding. The €172·8m order has been funded by the Umbria region (€55·6m) and Trenitalia (€117·2m), and the EMUs will be used on regional services in Umbria, Toscana and Lazio.

The 164 m long EMU has a high-capacity internal layout, with 618 seats and 458 standing places, as well as 16 spaces for bicycles.
‘The new 200 km/h regional train represents a crucial step in the fleet transformation and renewal process that Trenitalia and the FS Group are pursuing’, said Trenitalia CEO & General Manager Gianpiero Strisciuglio. ‘This process, which complements the renewal of the high speed and inter-city fleet, is the result of a total investment of €7bn, which will allow us to renew 80% of the regional fleet by 2027. Trenitalia is committed to ensuring cutting-edge trains that are not only modern and comfortable, but above all sustainable, capable of connecting regions and communities, promoting more efficient, accessible and environmentally friendly mobility.’
Managing Director of Alstom Italy Michele Viale said the EMU designed and built entirely in Italy and ‘represents the excellence of our industrial expertise’ and would offer passengers ‘a faster, more comfortable and more sustainable travel experience’.

The EMU was unveiled at Trenord’s Milano Fiorenza depot on September 30 in parallel with the Expo Ferroviaria trade fair. At the fair itself, Alstom showed models of Coradia Stream sets ordered by South Tirol transport authority STA as well as an inter-city variant which Trenitalia is to use on the routes from Roma to Taranto and Reggio Calabria from H2 2026. The inter-city sets will have 403 seats in Plus and Easy classes.
