UK: Bombardier Transportation has awarded Balfour Beatty a £12·5m contract to build a production, testing and office facility at its Derby plant, where it will manufacture the 65 nine-car Aventra EMUs ordered for London’s Crossrail project.

The 250 m by 40 m structure will have four tracks accessible from either end. Each track will be able to handle a 10-car train, with full-length inspection pits and overhead electrification supported by an upgrade of the site’s power supply. A two-storey annexe will contain office space. Completion is scheduled for winter 2016.

‘We have been working very closely with our customer to ensure we fulfil their exacting requirements whilst maintaining value for money and we look forward to assisting Bombardier in achieving their vision’, said Peter Commins, Balfour Beatty Managing Director for the North West, on February 17.
