BRAZIL: Malaysian company Scomi Engineering held a groundbreaking ceremony for its monorail factory in Taubaté on March 12.

The R$50m plant is being developed on a 98 000 m2 site between the cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The factory will be modelled on Scomi’s plant in Kuala Lumpur, and is scheduled begin production of vehicles for São Paulo Line 17 (Gold) and Line 18 (Bronze) from 2017. It will also have the capability to build metro and light rail vehicles in the future.

‘This investment is part of our strategy to localise manufacturing of monorail trains’, said Scomi Country President Hilmy Zaini Zainal. ‘This will help us improve manufacturing efficiency and boost local human capital development’. Scomi believes ‘there is a lot more opportunity in Brazil which we can capitalise on and our commitment to this facility will strengthen our position in this market.’
