HYDROGEN: Alstom and automotive technology company Plastic Omnium have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on ‘high-end’ hydrogen storage systems for on-train applications, with a dedicated team established to manage the technical and commercial development of ‘innovative and competitive’ equipment.

The aim is to launch hydrogen storage systems for regional trains in France and Italy from 2022.

‘The emergence of a strong hydrogen ecosystem is of critical importance for driving the development of hydrogen rail as a zero emissions alternative for regional rail’, said Alstom Chief Commercial Officer Thierry Best on September 21.

’The planned combination of Plastic Omnium’s expertise in hydrogen storage and our expertise in hydrogen trains is an important milestone to build an innovative and strong hydro rail value chain.’
