PAKISTAN: The Ministry of Railways, Pakistan Railways and Russian rolling stock supplier Transmashholding signed a memorandum of understanding setting out plans for co-operation on October 1.

The parties have agreed to identify projects where Pakistan might be interested in Russian products, and where TMH could make investments and transfer technology to local partners.

'Pakistan is a new market for Transmashholding', said TMH Commercial Director Shukhrat Makhmudov. 'We are ready to offer our colleagues state-of-the-art machinery capable of increasing the efficiency of the country's transport system. I hope that our co-operation will be long-term and beneficial.'

PR has sourced locomotives and rolling stock from China in recent years. It is currently suffering from a shortage of operational locomotives, with long-standing plans to acquire more from US or Chinese suppliers mired in political debate.

On October 24 the Hindustan Times reported that Indian Railways was close to finalising a deal to sell 50 locomotives to PR and lease further a 50.
