ROMANIA: Bucureşti metro operator Metrorex has selected CAF as preferred bidder for a contract to supply 43 six-car trainsets to operate on the future 6·1 km Line M5 from Drumul Taberei to Eroilor, with an option for eight more.

Metrorex had hoped to name the winner of the contract on December 1 last year, but decided to extend the procurement process owing to the complexity of the tenders.

CAF’s bid was worth €307·8m. Lower offers were submitted by CSR Qingdao Sifang (€272m) and Astra Vagoane Călători (€260m). Price was only given a 60% weighting in the evaluation of the bids, however, with technical performance given 15%, delivery terms 12%, maintenance costs and conditions 8% and warranty terms 5%.

Higher-priced bids were also submitted by Pesa (€341m) and Alstom (€322). The unsuccessful bidders have until March 20 to appeal before the contract is formally awarded.

The order is being financed by the government and a European Investment Bank loan.
