CHILE: Bombardier Transportation has been awarded what it says is the first ERTMS contract in Chile and the second in Latin America.

The €15m deal announced on October 28 covers the supply of ETCS Level 1 signalling for the 22 km Santiago - Nos section of the 82 km commuter route from Santiago to Rancagua. State railway EFE is upgrading the Rancagua line with the aim of cutting journey times from 1 h 20 min to 50 min, and increasing annual ridership from 6 million to 18 million.

Bombardier is to supply and maintain for five years its EBI Lock 950 R4 computer-based interlocking technology suitable for 4 min headways. It is also supplying EBI Track train detection, associated onboard systems and an EBI Screen control centre which will manage the entire 400 km route from Santiago to Chillán.
