CANADA: The federal and provincial governments have announced funding for significant enhancements as well as operation and maintenance of the Hudson Bay Railway.

Operated by the Arctic Gateway Group partnership of First Nation and northern communities, the Hudson Bay Railway provides the only affordable year-round all-weather mode of passenger and freight transport to several communities in northern Manitoba.

Over the next two years the federal government is to invest up to C$60m on top of its existing support for the Arctic Gateway Group, while the province will provide up to C$73.8m.

‘The Hudson Bay Railway is an engine for economic development, job growth and tourism opportunities, and our government is proud to support this vital transportation network connecting people and businesses in northern Manitoba with the goods and supplies they need to live, work and invest in their communities’, said Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson on August 3.
