ROMANIA: Infrastructure manager CFR SA has awarded the Asocierea RailWorks consortium of Arcada and Alstom a €450m contract for the modernisation and electrification of the 93 km line from București to Jilava and the Bulgarian border at Giurgiu.

This aims to increase capacity, energy efficiency and service reliability on the direct route from the capital to the border.
The contract has a 36-month implementation term, covering both design and implementation.
Consortium leader Arcada will be response for the infrastructure works, while Alstom’s 25% share of the contract includes the installation of electrification, ETCS Level 2 and digital train control systems to support 160 km/h operation.
This is Contract 2 for work on the line. Contract 1 completed by Porr in 2024 covered the repair of damage caused by flooding in 2005 when the bridge over the River Arges in Grădiștea collapsed forcing traffic to be diverted over a longer route via Videle.
‘This new contract consolidates Alstom’s leading position on the Romanian railway market, for both signalling and electrification’, said Gabriel Stanciu, Alstom Managing Director for Romania, Bulgaria & Moldova, on August 14. ‘It will be another significant achievement for our growing team of over 230 highly qualified engineers, whose expertise supports both our local and our international projects.’
